PhD opportunities for 2016
PhD opportunities for 2016
Applications are invited for the prestigious and distinctive three-year full time PhD programme within the Arthritis Research UK Rheumatoid Arthritis Pathogenesis Centre of Excellence starting in Autumn 2016. The ARUK Centre of Excellence has been developed in collaboration with the Universities of Glasgow, Newcastle and Birmingham along with funding and support from Arthritis Research UK.
The programme capitalises on the expertise of the contributing academic institutions, and offers an outstanding opportunity for students to undertake excellent project based research training within world-class research environments. The core objectives of our Centre of Excellence are
- To establish the immunobiology of the earliest events that trigger rheumatoid arthritis.
- To identify why this is not resolved allowing the disease to progress to a chronic state.
We have identified two key programmes which will help us to meet these objectives
- The pathogenic, autoantigen-driven immune response in RA
- The molecular orchestration of synovial inflammation in RA
Successful applicants will undertake PhD training with an internationally recognised group within one of the three partnering universities in areas relating to these programmes.
The Centre has funding for 12 studentships over the period of its grant – 8 of these have already been awarded and details of these projects can be found at www.race-gbn.org/phds/
Four studentships are available across the collaborating Institutes starting in Autumn 2016. PhD fellows will be able to spend time in at least two of the institutions as part of an integrated exchange programme to offer a truly exceptional educational support programme, with maximal exposure to state of the art technology in the arthritis field. Training in immunology, molecular and cellular biology, matrix biology and stromal cell biology will be available as part of the programme. Extensive novel molecular polyomic approaches will also be available as part of the programme.
Applicants will normally be expected to reside (or have residency) within the UK/EU. Applicants should have obtained, or expect to obtain a 2:1 or 1st Class Honours degree in a relevant subject. Support includes an annual stipend at RCUK rates for 3 years, PhD registration fees at UK/EU student rate, research expenses, general training funds, travel and meeting costs.
